Approach
People need to be seen.  They need their view of the world to be understood before they can explore possibilities and tap into unrecognized strengths.  And open, collaborative dialogue helps people become more fully themselves.  With a background in both art and science, Dr. Armstrong's approach is multidisciplinary and very interactive.  Clients are able to achieve their goals and find new perspective through creativity, self-exploration, and humor.  Techniques from a variety of therapies are used to meet each client's individual needs.

Short Term Therapy
With a practical and present-oriented approach, both therapist and client collaborate to set goals and focus on positive change.  Clients learn more about their strengths and how their unique qualities can move them toward success, balance, and happiness.  Solution-focused therapy can help solve a particular problem or work through a crisis.

Longer Term Therapy
Therapy can be a longer, more in-depth process, as clients choose an existential path towards understanding themselves and their purpose in the world.  As we each construct our own realities, we create advantages and obstacles for ourselves.  Often, responses to our past can limit experience in the present.  However, through exploration, clients can learn how to better navigate and change their personal constructions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT is an evidence-based approach that can help clients recognize and break old patterns by addressing specific thoughts, feelings or actions.  CBT is one of the most clinically effective therapies, especially for trauma, panic attack, phobia, depression and stress.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a technique to help clients notice and appreciate each moment as it happens, to regulate emotion, and to expand awareness.  Such careful observation of thoughts, emotions, behaviors and sensations can help move the brain towards new ways of experiencing the world.  Studies have shown that mindfulness is a powerful way to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

Couples Counseling
In couples counseling, a variety of clinically-proven techniques (such as Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman and Non-Violent Communication) are used to help couples better understand their own motivations, learn how to communicate more effectively and minimize conflict.  Clients also work on enhancing intimacy, creating emotional safety and fostering appreciation for each other’s dreams and aspirations.  The result is a happier and more unified partnership.

Dr. Brooke Armstrong provides counseling and psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, creative block and relationships. Dr. Brooke Armstrong does couples counseling and marriage counseling, sex therapy and stress managment.
