Brooke
Armstrong, PhD, MFTI
Dr. Brooke Armstrong has long been fascinated by how the brain works
and how we create our own experience. She conducted research at the
Salk Institute and received her PhD in Neuroscience from UCSD. Her
studies focused on how we integrate perception, memory and attention to
understand the world around us. Dr. Armstrong is a Marriage and Family
Therapist Intern (#65349) who has a Master’s degree in
Counseling Psychology from the Wright Institute and an undergraduate
degree in Psychology from Stanford University. She was a Visiting
Professor in the Psychology Department at UC Berkeley, and she has
lectured at Stanford University, UCSD, and California College of the
Arts. Most recently, she was invited to give a talk on the Neurobiology of Love at California Pacific Medical Center.
Currently,
Dr. Armstrong sees clients in a private practice in Hayes
Valley, where she is employed and supervised by Robert Norgaard, LMFT
#42553. She also runs DBT/CBT groups and teaches coping skills at
UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. For two years,
she provided counseling for
individuals and couples at Haight Ashbury Psychological Services, where
she helped people with relationships, health concerns, depression, career, creative expression, anxiety and stress. Her clients
have worked through major transitions, discovered their strengths and overcome the obstacles in their lives. Dr. Armstrong
provided
suicide and grief counseling at Family Services Agency of Marin, art
therapy at Conard House, and animal-assisted therapy for
developmentally disabled children at St. Francis Elementary School.
Along with her interest in brain science and psychology, Dr. Armstrong
pursued a career in design. For many years, she worked as an
interaction designer, and ultimately she specialized in design research
and ethnography – studying people’s emotions, motivations and behaviors
in order to provide practical design solutions to address their needs.
Brooke holds two US patents, and she continues to design things,
paint and make films. She also enjoys giving her standard poodle Lokita
unusual and somewhat
embarrassing haircuts.
Lokita
Mariposa
Lokita is a non-shedding, hypoallergenic standard poodle who is available to work
with
clients. She received her Canine Good Citizenship award
from the AKC, and she is a licensed therapy dog with San Francisco
SPCA.
